Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26th, 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American singer and actress who toured for more than 40 years. A torch performer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 until 1969. Her performance of "Cry Me a River" which she introduced on her debut album was included in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award for 1974 for her role in Emergency as nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began as an actress while she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's long and successful acting career started in 1944 , with roles in films. These included roles as the lead female character in many westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958), and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. It was the beginning of her professional musical career. In 1969 she released her final studio album. But she was a star in television's Emergency series in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) in which she was co-starring with Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
